Highlights of Man Work Development:
Test dog to determine its drives & character make-up:
- Start dog as young as possible - Start obedience only after the “bite” is established - All beginning bite work is done in “prey” only
Begin Man Work foundation work using rag, tug & sleeve:
- Start with “prey” work in drive - Establish a forward & upward strike - Work to establish bite quality on both the right & left arms - Teach the “re-bite” or “counter” - Work on the “carry” of the prey item - Introduce the stick very slowly - Slowly work in various “environmentals” - Teach a non-confrontational “out” - Establish the “bark” - Introduce “prey guarding” - Include “escape” & “back-up” bites - Slowly introduce the “gun” - Start to show some “defense” but with “prey’ bites - Slowly harden to “defense” - Eventually introduce an occasional “defense” bite - Utilize enough “civil work” to orientate the dog to the man - Perfect the “out”
Introducing the full body bite suit & hidden sleeve:
- Start with jacket being held and the bite in the armpit area - Establish bites both to the right & left sides with “carry” - Slide the suit jacket on one arm & allow a “carry” - Make sure the dog is striking launching up into the strike - Have the dog “out” from the armpit bite with reward bite - With the “out” established, work with the jacket fully on - Work on both right & left, front & back upper body bites - Reintroduce forearm bites and start on leg bites - Target upper body, with other areas as secondary - Work “prey” & “defense” with “environmentals” & the “gun” - Start introducing “scenarios” into the training regime
