PDX-SE Protection Phase:
Protection Dog Xtreme – Street Elite (PDX-SE) Protection will consist of demonstrating the exercises listed below:
- “Dual Attack” – One decoy about 35 yards away (in suit, with a weapon) threatens and then attacks the handler. After warning, the handler sends his dog (that is either off lead or if on lead, the leash is dropped) to engage the attacking decoy. While the dog is fighting with the first decoy, a second decoy (in suit, with a weapon) attacks the handler from a hiding place about 10 yards behind the handler. As the second decoy comes to engage the handler, the handler “outs” his dog from fighting the first decoy and calls the dog back to take on the second decoy. After seeing the second decoy subdued, the first decoy runs off. The handler “outs” the dog from the engaging the second decoy and puts the dog in a “down stay”. The handler then has the second decoy step back (3 steps) and raise his hands. With the dog guarding from the “down stay” position, the handler frisks the decoy and takes his weapon. Upon returning to his dog and commanding the dog to “sit” in the basic position, the handler heels his dog into position to do a transport (either a “side” or “back” transport) of the captured decoy to the Evaluator. The handler hands the weapon to the Evaluator and the exercise ends with the handler heeling his dog away.
- “Recall / Callback / Call Off” – With the dog at a “sit” in the basic position, a decoy (in suit, with weapon) strides out to the center of the field about 60 yards away. When the first warning is given by the handler about sending his dog, the decoy continues to threaten. The handler gives a second warning and then sends his dog. After the dog has been released the decoy finally stops the threat and turns to run off. When the decoy is committed to leaving, the handler “calls off” is dog at a minimum distance of 20 yards. The dog must then return to its handler without biting the decoy. When the recall has been completed with the dog having returned to the handler, the exercise is completed.
- “Courage Test with Gun Shots and attempted Escape” - With the dog at a “sit” in the basic position, a decoy (in suit, with weapon) strides out to the center of the field about 60 yards away. When the first warning is given by the handler about sending his dog, the decoy continues to threaten. The handler gives a second warning and then sends his dog. As the dog is released the decoy (in suit, with blank gun) fires two (2) shots in the general direction (but not directly at the dog or handler) of the dog speeding toward him. With the gun empty, the decoy throws down the gun and yells to ward off the dog just as they meet face to face. The dog must impact the decoy and take the fight to the decoy, who is doing his best to fight off the dog. When the handler is about 5 yards away, he tells the decoy to stop fighting and he will call off the dog. When the decoy complies, the handler commands his dog to “out”. When the dog has released, the handler commands the dog into a “down stay” position to guard the decoy. The handler then commands the decoy to step back (3 steps) and raise his hands. The dog continues to guard the decoy while the handler retrieves the gun that was tossed away. With the handler’s attention on retrieving the gun, the decoy attempts an escape. Again, the dog must stop him. When the decoy has been subdued, the handler again moves to about 5 yards away, where he tells the decoy to stop fighting and he will again call off the dog. When the decoy finally complies, the handler commands his dog to “out”. As before, when the dog has released, the handler commands the dog into a “down stay” position to guard the decoy. The handler then commands the decoy to step back (3 steps) and raise his hands. Upon returning to his dog and commanding the dog to “sit” in the basic position, the handler heels his dog into position to do a transport (either a “side transport” or “back transport”) of the captured decoy to the Evaluator. With the “transport” completed, the handler hands the weapon to the Evaluator and the exercise ends with the handler heeling his dog away.
- A "Surprise Scenario", as determined by the Evaluator, shall be explained to all "Street Elite" competitors at the handler's meeting just prior to the start of the trial. The unknown factor of the "Surprise Scenario" adds credence to those that earn the coveted Protection Dog Xtreme - Street Elite (PDX-SE) title.
